In the 1980s the Class 37 locomotives were extensively refurbished. The 37/4 locomotives were fitted with electric train heating and the main generator was replaced by an alternator. The latter was also the case in the 37/5 variant. The modifications allowed the refurbished locomotives to work passenger trains all year round. The features of these intricately detailed models include an NEM Coupling pocket snowplough fitting, bi-directional lighting, prototypical roof details including air horns and aerials where relevant, an NEM 6 Pin Decoder socket and a twin fly-wheel motor mechanism driving all axles.
