Known as ‘Monster boxes’, 300 were built for EWS in 1998 by Thrall at York Works. EWS was at that time owned by American Railroad Wisconsin Central and these vehicles are not unlike the large gondola wagons in use in the USA. Operated in rakes, some vehicles have buffers and conventional couplings to couple to locomotives whilst others have buck eye couplings (with no buffers). They have been used to convey aggregates, coal, timber and scrap metal. 100 of these were subsequently reduced in height.
Thrall built a further batch of 50 wagons to the new reduced height specification at their works in Studenka in the Czech Republic in 2003. These have conventional buffers and couplings and are designated MOA. They found useful employment on the major engineering works carried out for the modernisation of the West Coast Main Line.
