Cog railways radiate a very special fascination with their unique combination of mountains and bold route, with numerous bridges and tunnels. The locomotion of the train is effected by the intervention of a gear wheel in a rack in the middle of the track, since the usual friction between wheel and rail is no longer sufficient for the steep gradients. In the case of rack railways of the so-called mixed system, in which friction sections alternate with rack and pinion sections, depending on the gradient conditions, the tractive force is exerted by one and the same machine. In the Alps you will find many private rack railways, which enjoy great popularity among tourists from all over the world.
