Prototype notes:-
Built from 1902 onwards to carry general merchandise they were the ultimate Iron Minks but they came about just as a debate started to whether large box vans were a good idea or not and only 8 were constructed. Although described as Iron Minks they were in fact all steel built except for the wooden folding doors. The last 6 built were fitted with vacuum brakes and usually worked the night express freights between Paddington, Bristol and S Wales. All the wagons survived into BR ownership with the last one condemned in 1954 (but 2 survived as Swindon stores vans until 1966.
