Prototype Notes
What was a GWR Mica B?
The Mica B was a Great Western Railway insulated refrigerated van designed primarily for perishable traffic, especially fish, meat, dairy, and fruit.
They were among the most important non-passenger vehicles on the GWR.
Design & construction
Mica B key features:
-
Insulated wooden body (not iron like Iron Minks)
-
Double-planked walls packed with insulation
-
White-painted roof (to reflect heat)
-
Doors on each side
-
End ice hatches for loading ice
-
Vacuum brakes
-
12-ton capacity
-
9 ft wheelbase (later builds varied)
Unlike later BR fridge vans, cooling came from ice, not mechanical refrigeration.
