The Class 52 Diesel hydraulic locomotive in the shape of D1000 was introduced by BR (Western Region) in experimental Desert Sand Livery to provide a more powerful alternative to the Warships and Hymeks that were already in service - hauling express freight and passenger trains on the Region. D1000 was an Old Oak Common (81A) Loco.

74 of these dual-engined diesel-hydraulic locomotives were eventually built (30 at Swindon and 44 at Crewe works) between 1961 and 1964 and all had a two word name starting with 'Western', which gave rise to their common name. The second word was either of heraldic or regimental derivation.

The class was relatively short lived and all were out of service by 1977. Seven survive into preservation and this model was designed from laser scans of D1015 Western Champion. They are due for release Q3 2020, so order as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
