Baseboard Size required 114cm x 99cm (3'9" x 3'3")
In itself, this is a compact layout with great potential, especially if modelled as a preserved railway. Doing so enables you to run pretty much any piece of rolling stock that takes your fancy including those from the National rail network and the Thomas the Tank range, ideal if you have a very young modelling member of the family.
However might we suggest building the baseboard to the larger size of 145cm x 99cm from the start as this will enable you to extend the layout into the larger version (plan2) - when time and money allow.
With this layout design, some storagetracks have been positioned in the centre of the non-scenic section. These are for keeping your spare locomotives and rolling stock safe and ready to use. Thransfer to and from the layout via the siding 'X'.
Up to two trains, a passenger and a freight, could be run simultaneously, each one being halted in turn in the loop and isolated by switching the points. To shunt the goods yard, the passenger train would have to be parked up in the siding 'X', or lifted off altogether.
